Artificial intelligence continues to make its way into the main stream and into multiple industry sectors. The arts are no exception. Over the past few years, a wave of organizations are beginning to use artificial intelligence as a method to enhance the audience experience. In particular, the use of artificial intelligence in the facilitation of audience engagement is an interesting trend in arts organizations. This report focuses on how performing arts organizations are currently using technology for engagement and how emerging tech offers new engagement pathways.

Immersive Technology: Is it Right for Your Theatre?

There are so many different types of technologies and combinations of them currently being used and developed in the performing arts industry to produce what is known today as ‘immersive experiences,’ created to enhance the audience experience. According to Josephine Machon, “in theatre discourse ‘immersive’ is now attached to diverse events that assimilate a variety of art forms and seek to exploit all that is experiential in performance, placing the audience at the heart of the work.” (22) However, these immersive experiences have different purposes across performing arts industries, as discussed in Playing With Reality In The Performing Arts - AR, VR, And MR,and each purpose requires a variation of AR, VR, and/or Mixed Reality technology packages for its implementation. But how to choose among all these choices is a question that has not been discussed enough in the theater industry.
Connecting People to Place: How Digital Maps Advance Civic Engagement in the Cultural Sector

In a time where we can build and access a wealth of geographic information through our mobile devices and online, digital tools are being leveraged to make these kinds of civically engaged connections. Digital maps, in particular, have been built to service archival needs as well as transform the public’s interaction with art and archeological sites. By examining how organizations have deployed various digital map technologies in their work, we can also see how these tools have practical value and the potential to more broadly advance the cultural fields.
This report reveals the current opportunities for a variety of digital map intervention models that provide for deeper audience engagement with public art — including a case study and a lived experiment with a Google map public art tour.
Live Streaming Performing Arts Using social media: why, how & best practices

Live streaming through social networks has become a growing trend for performing arts institutions interested in reaching larger audiences and expanding their online presence. In a study conducted by the Pew Research Center on how cultural organizations use different kinds of technology platforms to engage audiences, 29% of participating organizations stated that they host online events, with 81% of them streaming videos and 86% claiming to have expanded their online events within the past several years.
